Auxerre

Auxerre is located in  the Yonne department in the region of Burgundy.

 

From Paris Bercy is 2h by train to Auxerre Saint Gervais station.

Sculpture of  Marie Noël.

 

Marie Noël is one of the great poetesses of the 20th century.

 

She was awarded the Grand Prix de Poésie by the Académie Française in 1962, and even became an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur.

Cathedral of Saint Etienne.

It was constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, on the site of a Romanesque cathedral from the 11th century, whose crypt is found underneath the cathedral.

 

It is known for 11th century Carolingian frescoes found in the crypt, and for its large stained glass windows.

Abbaye of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre

 

The Abbey of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre is a former Benedictine monastery dedicated to its founder Saint Germain of Auxerre, the bishop of Auxerre, who died in 448.
