Basilica Sainte-Marie-Madeleine of Vézelay

Vézelay Abbey or  Abbaye Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vézelay is a Benedictine and Cluniac monastery.

 

It was constructed between 1120 and 1150.

It became a major pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, believed to house relics of Mary Magdalene.

 

It’s also a starting point for one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
