Echternach lies near the border with Germany, and is the oldest town in Luxembourg.

It is one of Europe’s earliest centers of culture and christinisation.

Saint Willibrord from Northumberland founded a Benedictine abbey here in 698 which, in the 19th and 11th century, became an artistically refined writing school.

The origins of the town wall go back to the 10th century.
