Cathedral Saint Denis

The Basilica of Saint-Denis  is a large former medieval abbey church and present cathedral in the commune of Saint-Denis, in the de9of Seine Saint Denis in the region of Ile-de-France.

The building is of singular importance historically and architecturally as its choir, completed in 1144.

 

The Basilica is named after Saint Denis. Saint Denis is the patron saint of France. He was also the first Bishop of Paris

The basilica became a place of pilgrimage and a necropolis containing the tombs of the kings of France, including nearly every king from the 10th century to Louis XVIII in the 19th century.

The mausoleum is created by Italian artists 

 

 

The beheading of Saint Denis, on the tympanum of the north portal (“Porte des Valois”) of the basilica, which has retained its columnar statues. 

The tomb of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis, built between 1560 and 1573, which stood in the centre of the rotunda.
