Fontainebleau

Palace of Fontainebleau is located in the commune of Fontainebleau in the departement of Seine et Marne in the region Île de France.

It is one of the largest French royal castles.

It served as a hunting lodge and summer residence for many of the French monarchs, like Louis VII. Francis I, Henry II, Louis-Philippe, Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon III. 

 

“Fontainebleau” took its name from the “Fontaine Belle-Eau”, a natural fresh water spring located in the English garden not far from the château. The name means “Spring of beautiful water”

From Paris Gare de Lyon is 45 minites by the R line to the  Fontainebleau – Avon stop.

Bus 1 or 8 to the stop ‘ Hôtel de Ville’ or ‘ Chateau’.

 

 

 

The Grand Salon, also known as the “Salon des Jeux de la Reine”, was used in the 17th and 18th centuries as the “Grand Cabinet de la Reine”, before becoming the Salon des Jeux under Marie-Antoinette.
